Vacancies in Kleve’s downtown area pose a significant challenge, one that has already been brought to the public’s attention through the “KulturLOKAL” 2024 project, in which we participated. The large number of vacant spaces in Kleve’s downtown is not only an aesthetic problem but also an economic one. To revitalize the downtown area, it is crucial to actively implement existing concepts such as “Klever Sprossen” in collaboration with the city administration, retailers, and real estate agents.
A diverse and varied selection of restaurants, specialty shops, and cultural events is essential to create incentives for residents and visitors alike. Only in this way can the downtown area remain attractive in the long term and positively influence urban development.
Revitalizing vacant storefronts and establishing an open, intercultural meeting space are intended to eventually lead to a sociocultural center that connects high culture and subculture, provides political education, and offers space for artist gatherings, concerts, exhibitions, workshops, German-Dutch symposia, and readings.
Our current space, which we call “Nest,” serves as a central hub and is intended to offer a permanent location with expanded possibilities in the future. Among other things, we hope to include coworking spaces, rehearsal rooms, and other offerings that contribute to revitalizing the city center. It is time to actively address the issue of vacant properties and work together to find solutions that will make Kleve a vibrant and welcoming place.
